Woman sells 9-month-old daughter for Rs 1000 in Odisha

Baripada: In a shocking incident, a woman allegedly sold her 9-month-old baby girl for only Rs 1000.

The incident was reported from Khunta area in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.

Investigating into the incident, police rescued the baby girl and arrested five persons including the accused mother identified as Karmi Murmu.

According to reports, Karmi’s husband Musu Murmu of Mahulia village under Khunta police limits had migrated to Tamil Nadu for job. In absence of husband, the 25-year-old woman sold her infant daughter to a couple Phulamani Marandi and Akhil Marandi of Bipracharanpur village through the mediator Mahi Murmu of her village for only Rs 1000.

After returning from Tamil Nadu, Musu did not find his wife and child at home. When he visited his in-laws house, found his wife there without their baby. When he looked for his baby, Karmi told him that their baby was no more. However, Musu could not believe it and later came to know from his neighbours about sale of his child.

In this regard, Musu lodged a complaint at the Khunta Police Station following which police arrested accused mother, the couple who had bought the baby girl from Karmi and the middleman Mahi. The police rescued the baby and handed over to her father Musu.
