“Police will handle women, children, SC& ST, senior citizens cases with sensitivity. We will try our best so that police will be like a friend to the common man,” Y B Khurania said in his speech after taking charge from R P Sharma.

“Every evening from 4-5 pm a senior police officer will be present in the Commissionerate to hear out the grievances of the people,” said the 1990 batch IPS officer.

Khurania takes charge at a time when the Commissionerate police is on a high alert in Odisha capital over the disappearance of four suspicious men in the city who rushed out from a hotel on Monday after being asked to produce identity proof .

On the rising terror threat in Odisha, the new commissioner replied, “Things have improved a lot after the Commissionerate system, we now have PCR system. We need to increase patrols and surveillance, we also need add the systems which we do not have. I will sit together with my team to review the situation; we will find out the gaps and try to plug them”.

On the rising number of accidents and traffic related deaths in twin city, the former Vigilance special director presented a blueprint.

“Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are witnessing traffic problems, there is a parking space crunch, road safety is also an issue, repeated accident spots will be identified and a road safety audit will be undertaken and solution will be asked from the experts,” he said.

The 5th Cuttack and Bhubaneswar Police commissioner has said that in the last eight years police Commissionerate has improved a lot and achieved many feats. But at the police station level, there are still many vacancies and lacuna which need to be fulfilled.

On the rising challenges of cyber crime and special crimes there is a need for specialization he felt. The commissioner mooted a need for special squads to tackle these crimes more effectively like special crime squad, crime against woman squad, homicide squad, traffic investigation squad, cyber crime squad.
