Young woman cut to 31 pieces in Umerkote of Odisha’s Nabarangpur; probe initiated

Umerkote: A young woman was cut to as many as 31 pieces by a couple and the body was buried in a forest near Muramdihi village under Umerkote block and Raighar police limits in Nabarangpur to escape police action. Police have detained the couple and launched a probe into the alleged murder.

The detained accused couple was identified as Chandra Rout and his wife from the village.

The victim woman was identified as 21-year-old Tilabai Ganda, who belonged to Baghabeda village in the district. She was the daughter of Luduram Ganda.

According to a source, Tilabai was in a love relationship with the married man Chandra for nearly the last two years. On Wednesday evening, she went to Chandra’s house located around 10 kilometres away from her house, and insisted on getting married to the accused man.

Hatching a plan to eliminate Tilabai once and for all, Chandra and his wife killed the former. Later, they carried her body to the forest and buried it there cutting the body into 31 pieces.

“Some youths of Muramdihi village spotted the body while it was buried and only the right foot was visible above the ground. Stains of blood were also noticed nearby the spot. Later, the locals informed police about it,” an eyewitness expressed.

It is being suspected that the murder was the fallout of a love affair, a police source said.

On being informed, Raighar police reached the crime spot and exhumed the young woman’s body and launched a detailed probe. A scientific team has reached the spot and is assisting the probe team in the investigation.

Raighar police have registered a case (No-206/2023, under Sections 302, 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in this connection and sent the body for post-mortem.
