Youth arrested for impregnating minor tribal girl in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate Police today swung into action and arrested a youth accused of impregnating a minor girl residing at a girls’ hostel in Odisha capital.

The accused identified as Budha Murmu has been arrested by Mahila Police from Adivasi Colony in Salia Sahi here.

As per sources, the accused allegedly raped the minor victim while she had gone to her relative’s place at Salia Sahi during summer vacation. The accused is said to be a distant relative of the victim.

The minor girl hails from Mayurbhanj district and was staying at a hostel run by the ST & SC Development Department of the state Government.

“Four girls were referred to us for tests. We don’t have any report that suggests that the result is positive. We will send the report to the concerned department, after we get it,” said Ashok Patnaik, Capital Hospital Director.

The matter came to the fore during health check-up done under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) on June 28.

“On our request, government had deputed a team to investigate into the matter. Ultrasound and pregnancy tests were done of which four samples tested positive. Further tests are required to arrive at a conclusion,” said Parshuram Maharana, chairman of Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

Earlier, it was said that four inmates of the hostel were found to be pregnant during the health check-up. However, it later turned out to be one.

“After getting the report, IIC Mahila police station has been entrusted with the probe. We have sought a report following which legal action would be initiated,” said DCP Anup Sahu.
