Youth drowns in Mahanadi before Bali Jatra kicks off in Odisha’s Cuttack

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Irshad, a trader. Sources said Mohammad had gone to bathe in the river when the mishap took place at around 10.30 am.

Cuttack: Tragedy marred the much-awaited Bali Jatra as a youth drowned in the Mahanadi even before the festival kicked off in Cuttack district of Odisha here today. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Irshad, a trader. Sources said Mohammad had gone to bathe in the river when the mishap took place at around 10.30 am. He had reportedly come to trade in the week-long fair.

On getting the information, fire services personnel reached the spot and have started the rescue operations. Police too reached the spot and have started investigation. Further probe is underway.

Bali Jatra, touted to be the biggest trade fair in Odisha kicked offon the banks of Mahanadi river on the full moon day of holy month of Kartika after a hiatus of two years. The trade fair will continue till November 14 and traders from several states of the country, corporate houses and government agencies have set up their stalls at the trade fair. There will be around 2,000 stalls on the fairground this year, according to official sources.
