Niali: A youth died today by committing suicide at a Shaivite shrine in Amareswar village of Tulasipur panchayat under Charichhaka police limits of Puri district.
The deceased was identified as 46-year-old Shyamsundar Manik, who belonged to Badheipatana village under Niali police limits of Cuttack district. Shyamsundar was a well-known businessman.
According to a police source, Shyamsundar had left his house yesterday at around 11.00 pm to witness Jatra (theatre). The youth took an extreme step and hung with the help of a rope from an iron grill in front of Maa Parvati temple located on the premises of the shrine.
The youth’s body was spotted today morning at around 3.30 am, when a servitor (priest) of the temple reached to worship the presiding deities. Later, the priest informed about it to local residents and police station. A team of police reached the spot and launched a probe into the incident.
“The youth along with his son had come to on August 21 and offered a Bhog and paid his obeisance to the deities after taking a bath at the temple pond,” said the priest Purnachandra Nayak.
Shyamsundar’s body was seized and sent to a hospital in Charichhaka for post-mortem.
“The actual cause behind Shyamsundar’s untimely death can be ascertained only after a post-mortem report comes in,” a senior official of Charichhaka police station said.
