A youth was shot dead by an unidentified miscreant at Salia Sahi in Odisha capital on Monday evening. The deceased was identified as Ashwini Majhi, a resident of Tarini Nagar and hailing from Phulbani.
According to an eye witness, Ashwini was screaming for help as the miscreant was chasing him on road. The latter fired five rounds of bullets at Ashwini following which he fell on the road.
He sustained bullet injuries on his chest and died on the spot. The assailant fled the spot soon after committing the crime.
On being informed about the incident by locals, Nayapalli police reached the spot with forensic team and started investigation. The body was sent to Capital Hospital for autopsy.
Sources said, Ashwini had an exchange of heated words with two bike-borne youths on the fateful day. The youths had threatened Ashwini by firing bullets in air. Following the incident, Ashwini had reported the matter at Nayapalli police station. However, police officials neither paid any heed to the incident, nor provided security to Ashwini, sources added.
Though the exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained, Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said that past enmity might have led to the killing. Investigation into the matter is on.
