Youth, woman face kangaroo court’s wrath on abduction charge in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj

The accused youth Afzal Ansari of Karanjia Banasai and Mamata Mahakud of Batapalasa village in the block were reportedly tied to a tree and thrashed by villagers until police intervened and rescued them. 

Karanjia/Baripada: In a shocking incident, a youth and a woman were mercilessly beaten up under the direction of a kangaroo court for allegedly abducting a minor girl in Karanjia tehsil of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district today.

The accused youth Afzal Ansari of Karanjia Banasai and Mamata Mahakud of Batapalasa village in the block were reportedly tied to a tree and thrashed by villagers until police intervened and rescued them.

As per reports, the duo went to the house of one Anam Dehury on Tuesday evening when no one was at home and took his 13 year old daughter on the pretext of showing her the Rath Yatra. They, however, did not bring her back home.

The following day, Afzal and Mamata were fleeing the village when locals caught them. A kangaro court was summoned and as per the direction, the accused duo were tied to a tree and beaten up ruthlessly. Police on getting information, reached the spot and rescued them.

However, no whereabouts of the missing girl has been found yet. Official sources said investigation is underway.
