Malkangiri, Feb 15:

As many as 16 polling booths in Nakamamudi gram panchayat (GP) in Odisha’s remote Malkangiri district had a zero turnout of voters during the second –phase of three-tier panchayat polls in the state today.

Villagers apprehending retribution by Maoists who had called for a total boycott of the panchayat polls, none turned up at these booths to exercise their franchise, reports said.

Even village roads wore a deserted look as villagers had vacated the villages on the polling day.

As news broke out, BSF personnel have taken positions encircling the panchayat.

Notably, 19 polling booths were opened in Nakamamudi panchayat. While some people have cast their votes in three of these booths, not a single vote was cast in the remaining 16 polling booths, reports added.
