12-hr bandh over Harishankar ropeway demand in Odisha’s Balangir

As per reports, the proposal had even got a green signal from the Tourism department but later when the State government released a list of five ropeways to be set up at tourist sites, Harishankar had found no mention.

Balangir: Vehicular traffic came to a grinding halt and streets wore a deserted look after members of the Koshal Sangharsh Samiti (KSS) called a 12-hour bandh in Khaprakhol over a ropeway demand in pilgrimage site Harishankar in Balangir district of Odisha today. With Harishankar and Nrusinghanath temples both being important places of pilgrimage and tourist hotspots located on the slope of Gandhamardan hills, a ropeway for better connectivity has been a long-standing demand of locals. As per reports, the proposal had even got a green signal from the Tourism department but later when the State government released a list of five ropeways to be set up at tourist sites, Harishankar had found no mention. This had led to a lot of resentment among people in the region. A few days back, KSS had again taken up the issue. The agitation intensified after the members called a 12-hour bandh in Khaprakhol.

Due to road blockade, commuters too faced a harrowing time and daily business took a hit as commercial and business establishments remained shut. The impact of the bandh was also felt in neighbouring Dhandamunda area.
