Magha Purnima falls on the ‘purnima’ (full moon day) in the month of ‘Magha’ in the traditional Hindu calendar. Magha Purnima is one of the most auspicious purnimas.

Devotees take ritualistic bath at the Triveni Sangam in Prayag on this day. Famous ‘Kumbha Mela’ and ‘Magha Mela’ is also held during this time.

Magha Purnima also hold significance for followers of Buddhism as it is believed that Gautama Buddha pronounced his impending death on this day.

Magha Purnima 2022 Date: February 16, Wednesday.

Purnima Tithi Begins: February 15, 2022 9:43 PM.

Purnima Tithi Ends: February 16, 2022 10:26 PM.

Rituals: Devotees wake up early in the morning and take holy dip in any waterbody, before sunrise. Those who are unable to take dip in the river, they can bath at home by mixing Gangajal in water.

After ritualistic bath, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Hanuman. Magha Purnima is also dedicated to worshipping Goddess Parvati and Lord Brihaspati.

Devotees also perform the Satyanarayana Puja and recite the Satyanarayana Katha.

The idol of the Lord is worshipped with banana leaves, sandalwood paste, til, supari, moli and fruits.

Fasting on the day of Magha Purnima is also done by many devotees. The vrat observer breaks fast after offering ‘ardhya’ to the moon in the evening.

It is advised to make donations in the form of clothes, food, cereals, ghee, jaggery and fruits to Brahmins and needy on this day.

Significance: Is is believed that devotees get freedom from their sins and also acquire purity and peace of mind by taking holy dip in sacred rivers like Ganga, Saraswati and Yamuna on Magha Purnima.
