Abdul Bari presented with National Harmony Award

President Pranab Mukherjee here on Friday presented Haji Abdul Bari of Bhadrak with the National Harmony award for 2011.

Bari was presented with the award at a formal ceremony at the Vigyan Bhavan for his significant contribution to upholding of communal harmony in difficult times.

Bari had played a key role in maintaining communal peace and harmony during 1991 communal riots in Bhadrak, in the aftermath of destruction of Babri Masjid in1992, situation following 1993 Mumbai blasts, 2002 Godhra riots and 2008 Kandhamal riots by playing the peacemaker and co-ordinating among different communities, administration and police.

The award carries a citation and a cash component of Rs 2 lakh.

The award giving ceremony was attended by Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde among others.
