BJB College student Ruchika’s suicide: Mobile phone to be sent to Singapore for data retrieval

Bhubaneswar: In a significant development in the case of alleged suicide of BJB College student Ruchika Mohanty, Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh today said the mobile phone of the deceased will be sent to Singapore for data retrieval.

Addressing a press conference here, the police official said, “We have recovered the mobile phone of the girl. In order to retrieve necessary data from the device without affecting critical information, it will be sent to Singapore.”

During the investigation, as many as 198 students & hostel inmates of the college, friends, relatives and family members of the girl have been questioned, so far, the DCP said.

The students who were questioned didn’t mention anything about ‘ragging’. The investigators also questioned the students if the girl was under depression, to which they answered in negative, said Singh.

Further investigation by police is underway. A confidential phone number has been provided to the students to provide any information related to the case, he said.

A psychologist and a counsellor have been roped in to ensure that the students, who will be facing questions during the investigation process, do not feel intimidated, he added.

Ruchika, who hailed from Athagarh in Cuttack district, was found dead on a bed inside the hostel room of the college with a rope tied around her neck on July 2.

A note, suspected to have been written by Ruchika, was found near the body. In the note, it has been mentioned that she was under depression after being constantly ragged and tortured by three of her seniors. The trio has been held responsible for the death, in the note.

However, the deceased has not mentioned the names of the students.
