Cyclone Jawad: High alert for Odisha; here’s district-wise rainfall warning

Bhubaneswar: With formation of well-marked low pressure over Andaman Sea that is likely to intensify into Cyclone Jawad, India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued high alert for Odisha and its neighbouring Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Yesterday’s Low Pressure area over central parts of Andaman Sea moved westnorthwestwards and became a Well marked Low Pressure Area over southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining Andaman Sea at 5.30 am today. It lies over southeast Bay of Bengal at 8.30 am today.

It is likely to move westnorthwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over southeast & adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal during next 12 hours. Then it is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over central parts of the Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 24 hours.

According to IMD, the Cyclonic storm Jawad is likely to reach west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts around December 4 morning. Thereafter, it is likely to move north-northeastwards.

Under the influence of above system, Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over southeast & adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, from today, December 2 evening. Gale winds speed reaching 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph likely to prevail over central Bay of Bengal from the early morning of December 3 and gradually increase becoming 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph over northwest & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal from the morning of December 4 for the subsequent 24 hours.

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to commence along & off North Andhra Pradesh – Odisha coasts from the mid-night of December 3 and increase gradually becoming 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from December 4 morning, for the subsequent 12 hours.

Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre issued intense rainfall warning for southern coastal, coastal and northern coastal districts of Odisha till December 6 morning.

Here’s district-wise rainfall warning: 

From Dec 3 to 4: Yellow warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam , Gajapati with heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada.

From Dec 4 to 5: Red warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls(more than 20 cm) over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur.

Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to at one or two places over the districts of Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khordha, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Koraput.

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Malkangiri.

From Dec 5 to 6: Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Puri.

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Ganjam and Gajapati.

Wind warning: 

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to commence along & off Odisha coasts from the mid-night of December 3 and increase gradually becoming 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from December 4 morning, for the subsequent 12 hours.

The fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea as the sea condition would become very rough to high over southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal on December 2. The sea condition would be high over central Bay of Bengal on December 3 and high to very high over west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal from the early morning of December 4 for the subsequent 24 hours.

The sea condition would be rough to very rough over along and off north Andhra-Odisha coasts from December 3 midnight and become high to very high from December 4 afternoon, for the subsequent 12 hours.
