Five cops suspended after gangster escapes from police custody in Odisha

Ganjam: Five policemen were placed under suspension after a hardcore criminal gave the cops a slip and escaped from a hospital in Odisha’s Berhampur town today.

According to reports, Ganjam Superintendent of Police (SP) Brijesh Rai has suspended five police personnel for dereliction of their duties after the dreaded criminal, who has been identified as Babu Nayak.

Among the suspended, there are four constables and one havildar, sources said.

Nayak fooled the cops and managed to escape from the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here while he was undergoing treatment.

The police had arrested Babu from Bhanjanagar about one month back.

Babu has a history of successfully escaping from police custody. Two months back he had fled from the Bhanjanagar prison where he was lodged after being arrested in a police encounter.

Following the incident, a massive manhunt was launched to nab Nayak but in vain. The criminal continues to be on the run till reports last came in.
