Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has taken suo-moto cognizance of the death of gangster Sheikh Hyder Alli after a police encounter and sought report from Odisha Police within four weeks.
The commission has issued notice to Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Odisha DGP, Director General of Prisons & DCS and Twin City Police Commissioner seeking report from them.
Hyder had snatched an AK-47 gun from a cop and threatened the policemen of the escort party to kill them, before being shot in a police encounter on July 24, revealed an FIR lodged by a police official with Simulia police. He was being shifted from Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack to Baripada Circle Jail in a police vehicle.
A case has been registered in this connection under Sections 307, 353, 294, 506, 224, 392 and Section 27 of the Arms Act.
