The agreement — signed in September 2011 — is set to expire in six months. It could be extended if the two countries agree to its continuation.

The agreement envisaged training of people in fish stock assessment, post-harvest technology, freshwater pearl culture, Hilsa fisheries management, protection of biological diversity vis-a-vis fisheries development, fish production and distribution.

A ministry statement said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was apprised of the memorandum of understanding on the agreement during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning.

“The MoU strengthened the bilateral friendly relations and promoted cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture sector. It also helped in developing many allied sectors of fisheries through mutually agreed activities and procedures between the two countries,” the statement said. (IANS)
