Indian History Congress session at Ravenshaw varsity from Saturday

The annual convention of Indian History Congress (IHC) will begin at the Ravenshaw University here on Saturday. Renowned academicians and researchers of social science will participate and share their work during the three-day convention.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik would inaugurate the conference at the newly constructed Convention Centre of the university, IHC sources added.

The main attraction of the 74th Indian History Congress would be renowned historian Prof Romila Thapar’s lecture on ‘Historical Traditions of Early North India’ on the inaugural day, the sources said.

The session would have a special panel on Odisha to discuss the history and the contemporary status of the state vis-a-vis society, state and region.

Padmashree Prof Hermann Kulke and four MPs of the state – Bhartruhari Mahatab, Baijayant Panda, Pinaki Mishra and Sashibhusan Behera – would be members of the Odisha panel.

Other panellists would be Dr Sugimoto of Japan, Prabhat Patnaik of JNU, German anthropologist R Hardenberg and economist Pradipta Choudhury, the sources said.

Besides these programmes, the session would also have six parallel sections in which nearly 1,300 papers would be presented by delegates on ancient, medieval, modern, countries other than India, archaeology and contemporary India.

This would be the second time that the event would be held at the premises. The first time was in 1949 when its 12th session was held at the erstwhile Ravenshaw College under the aegis of Harekrushna Mahtab. In 1978, the Utkal University had hosted the IHC session at Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar.
