India’s World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten in fray for Pakistan head coach role

New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Former India head coach Gary Kirsten is reportedly in the fray to replace Misbah-ul-Haq as Pakistan’s head coach.

The South African won the 2011 ICC Men’s World Cup with India. Besides Kirsten, former English cricketer Peter Moores and ex-Australian international Simon Katich are also in the shortlist. The latter has previously had stints as coach at two Indian Premier League (IPL) sides, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Moores on the other hand has recently signed a three-year contract with English county side Nottinghamshire.

Both Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis stepped down from their respective roles ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq as interim coach of the side.

Pakistan are off to a flying start in the ongoing T20 World Cup, winning against archrivals India in style in the opener before dispatching New Zealand to register two wins in two games.
