IPL betting racket in Odisha: Kingpin arrested from West Bengal

Berhampur: Odisha Police arrested kingpin from West Bengal in connection with a betting racket in Indian Premier League (IPL).

The principal accused stockist Dinesh Kumar Rathi (46) was apprehended at Sovaram Basak Street area under Posta Police Station in Kolkata on February 24, informed Gosaninuagaon Police today.

The accused has been remanded to police custody of Gosaninuagaon Police for five days after he was produced before the ACMM Court on February 25 in Kolkata.

The police also seized a mobile phone, SIM cards and laptop from his possession.

According to reports, Dinesh was operating the cricket betting racket from Kolkata.

During the course of investigation, the police have frozen a number of bank accounts of Dinesh having cash of Rs 72,96,000.

Four months ago, the police had busted the IPL betting racket by arresting six persons from Gosaninuagaon in Ganjam district. The accused persons were distributors R. Lalie Achary, K. Prasant Kumar Subudhi, Vishal Agarwal, Ajaya Kumar Panda, Sanjit Kumar Behera and one seller Ajit Kumar Barada. They were arrested along with seizure of huge cash amounting to Rs 30 lakh, mobile phones, SIM cards, PAN cards, motor vehicles as well as screenshots from the mobile phone used for facilitating online IPL betting.

On October29, 2021, the police had conducted raid at different places and arrested two bookies of Gandhi Nagar area on charges of online betting in IPL 2020 matches . The cops also seized cash of Rs 33,61,200 from their possession. The raid was conducted by a  team led by Berhampur SP Pinak Mishra.
