Sashti is an auspicious day for Tamil Hindus. It is dedicated to worshipping Lord Murugan.

Devotees observe fasting on this day to please the deity and invoke His blessings for a happy and prosperous life.

Sashti is observed on the sixth day of Krishna Paksha of every Hindu calendar month.

Tithi Timing : December 08, 9:26 pm – December 09, 7:54 pm

Sashti Rituals:

Devotees keep a partial or full fasting to please Lord Murugan.

The fasting begins at the time of sunrise and concludes on the next day after offering prayers to the Sun God.

Partial fasting can be done by eating fruits.

Those having health issues can observe the fast with single meal during the day.

Eating non-vegetarian food and consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited.

On this day, Lord Murugan devotees also read ‘Skanda Purana’ and recite the ‘Skanda Shasti Kavacham’.

It is considered very auspicious to visit the temples of Lord Murugan in the evening.

Sashti Significance

It is believed that a person who offers prayers and observes fasting on Shasti will receive blessings of Lord Murugan.
