Mamita Meher murder: BJP calls for 12-hour strike in Balangir tomorrow

Balangir: Demanding justice for woman teacher Mamita Meher and dismissal of a Minister, BJP’s Balangir unit today called for a 12-hour strike in the district on October 21.

A senior leader of BJP said the strike will be observed in the district from 6 AM to 6 PM tomorrow.

Earlier in the day, the party’s Kalahandi district unit observed a 12-hour strike over the murder of Mamita Meher. Over a hundred members of BJP led by MP Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo gheraoed the Balangir SP office. The party has been demanding a probe into the matter by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

In Bhawanipatna, the Kalahandi district headquarter, members of the Youth Congress took out a padayatra as a mark of protest over the murder case.

The body of Mamita Behera, a resident of Sindhekela area in Bolangir district was exhumed from a ground on the premises of Sunshine English Medium School at Mahaling in Kalahandi district yesterday. She was working as the Principal of the school.

After Mamita went missing on October 8, her family members had been accusing Govind Sahu of murdering her. Worth mentioning, Sahu was the managing committee president of the school.

On October 19, Sahu was nabbed and during questioning he accepted murdering the woman teacher.

Talks have been doing rounds that Minister of State Captain Dibyashankar Mishra was allegedly involved in the Mamita Meher murder case and have tried to shield Sahu, who had earlier escaped from police custody.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) requested Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for dismissal of Minister Mishra as he could influence the investigation into the matter.

The women’s body also directed Odisha DGP Abhay to ensure a fair probe into the case and provide security to the deceased woman teacher’s family.
