Medical student was murdered by friends at Devkund waterfall, alleges deceased’s family

Udala: The family members of a medical student alleged today that the youth was rather murdered by his friends who accompanied him on May 4, but he did not drown while taking a bath in Devkund waterfall under Udala police limits of Mayurbhanj district.

The deceased identified as Lipan Sahoo was a third-year student of Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital (PRMMCH) in the district. Lipan belonged to Golanthara locality under Rangeilunda tehsil in Berhampur of Ganjam district.

It was previously given the colour of a drowning case saying that the youth met watery grave on the intervening day, the deceased’s family reiterated.

“Lipan’s height was around 6 feet and he was standing in knee-dip water. How is it possible that he drowned?” the family questioned.

“Earlier, Lipan was ragged in his college by some students and he had sustained injuries in the incident. As he was a meritorious student, his friends might have become envious of it and killed him,” Lipan’s maternal uncle said.

Acting on an FIR lodged by the family, Udala police have registered a case (No-179/23) in this connection a launched a probe to ascertain the actual cause of death.

Worth mentioning, seven friends including Lipan had come to the tourist site to pass their time. It is said that Lipan slipped deep into the water due to the current leading to his untimely death.

Six friends of Lipan had strived a lot to save him but to no avail. Later, he was rescued by some locals and immediately admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, doctors at the government-run health facility declared him ‘brought dead’.

On being informed, Udala police had reached the hospital and seized Lipan’s body.

“We were standing in knee-dip water and taking bath in the waterfall. Unfortunately, Lipan slipped into the water and drowned,” a friend of the deceased Satyaprakash Panda earlier said.
