NDA Presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu reaches Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Odisha-born Draupadi Murmu received a rousing welcome at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here for campaigning ahead of the Presidential poll, scheduled to be held on July 18.

After arriving at the airport, the Bharatiya Janta Party-led NDA’s Presidential candidate was escorted to the State Guest House here.

As per the schedule, Murmu will have discussions with MLAs, MPs and party leaders of BJD and BJP regarding the ensuing election. She is also scheduled to meet Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Naveen Nivas.

Worth mentioning, the Centre provided Z+ security to the Presidential candidate after NDA announced her candidature for the upcoming poll.

If elected, Murmu, a former Odisha Minister, will be India’s first President from tribal community and second woman President since Independence. Also, she will be the second president from Odisha.

The 65-year-old has also served as the first woman Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.

In 2017, Odisha Assembly had conferred her with ‘Nilakantha Award’ for best MLA. Murmu also served as the Vice-President of BJP’s state ST Morcha in 1997 and held different organisational posts in the saffron party.
