Odisha Assembly: Congress stalls House over Hathras incident

Bhubaneswar: The fourth day of the Odisha Assembly Monsoon Session today began with a stormy note after opposition Congress created a ruckus in the House over the sensational gang-rape of a 19-year-old girl in Hathras of Uttar Pradesh.

Soon after the proceedings began, Congress MLAs stood up from their seats and started sloganeering against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath protesting the horrific incident. During the protest, the legislators later rushed to the well of the House and demanded resignation of the UP CM.

The party MLAs also condemned the UP police’s manhandling of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on their way to Hathras to meet the family of the gang-rape victim. Congress Legislature Party leader Narasingha Mishra termed the ‘hand-handedness’ of the UP police as unfortunate.

Following the ruckus, Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro adjourned the House thrice till 3 PM and also called for an all-party meeting.

It is pertinent to mention here that Congress members and activists have been protesting the manhandling of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at several places across the state for the last two days.

BJD MLA Snehangini Chhuria said, “We strongly condemn the Hathras incident. UP Police and the administration are functioning under the direction of the Government there. We want justice for the dalit girl.”

As per sources, a delegation of Congress MPs led by Rahul Gandhi will visit Hathras today to meet the the family of the gang-rape victim.  The Congress party will move court if Hathras victim’s family not allowed to meet lawyers and well-wishers.
