Odisha lawyers set to intensify stir against OAT abolition

The cease work agitation launched by the Odisha Administrative Tribunal (OAT) Bar Association and bars across the state last week to protest the state government’s decision to abolish the OAT continued today amid indications that the lawyers would intensify their protest from tomorrow.

An important meeting at the High Court Bar Association scheduled for tomorrow will decide the future course of action.

At a press conference on Sunday, members of different bars of the Tribunal had warned that the agitation by lawyers, office bearers of different associations and Tribunal bar employees would be intensified if the government did not make its stand clear by today.

Since December 2014, more than 1, 70,000 cases are pending in the High Court and transfer of cases from the OAT to it will add to the miseries of the common people, warned office bearers of different tribunal bar associations at the press meet.

OAT was set up in 1986 to provide legal relief to state government employees. Since then, a total 2, 66,911 cases have been filed in the tribunal till date of which 208676 cases have been heard and 58,234 are pending.
