Berhampur: A four-day-old divyang boy was discarded by his parents two days ago in the toilet of a hospital at New Bus Stand Road under Baidyanathpur police limits in Berhampur town of Ganjam.
However, the baby was rescued today by some Childline members with the help of local police.
Police were tipped off earlier in the day about the abandoned child by the Childline members. Swinging into action, Baidyanathpur police reached the private health facility and rescued the newborn. The infant was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MKCGMCH) in the town and was admitted to its special newborn care unit (SNCU) for treatment.

“Health condition of the infant boy was very critical as he was not breastfed since his birth and is stable now,” a doctor treating him at MKCGMCH stated.
“The boy with physical disabilities was abandoned after birth as his parents did not accept the reality. We collected their names and addresses from the hospital register and asked them to come. After counseling by the Childline members, parents of the infant agreed to take him back home,” a senior official of Baidyanathpur police station expressed.
The parents are daily-wagers and have been living in penury. Hence, they had decided for discarding the infant in the toilet and had fled from the hospital, the senior police official added.
