ODISHA MUSING: PROUD TO BE ANTI-NAVEEN

C O M M E N T

By Sandeep Sahu*

An innocent question put to me recently by a faithful reader of my occasional writings on Odisha politics got me thinking. “Why do you always write against Naveen Patnaik?” he asked rather innocuously during the mandatory telephonic conversation that follows every such article by me.

For the record, I answered him thus (though not necessarily in these exact words): “Because I genuinely believe his unfettered continuance as Chief Minister of Odisha is harmful to the long term interests of the state.”

But as I hung up, I began pondering, for the first time, long and hard over a question that I had never really asked myself while writing about the longest ‘serving’ Chief Minister of Odisha all these years.

Readers are free to come to their own conclusions. But I know I am not batting for any opposition party or leader when writing about Naveen. [In fact, I have an even poorer impression about the leading lights of the other parties.] It is not as if I have been personally or professionally aggrieved about any decision taken by Naveen Patnaik or his government either.

So, why do my writings always have an anti-Naveen bias (I will be the first person to admit they do)?

I came up with at least half a dozen answers, but none of them more important than Naveen Patnaik’s utter disdain for everything Odia: the people, the language, the culture .. you name it. The gross contempt manifests itself in myriad ways: in his stubborn refusal to learn Odia (I have always believed it is refusal and not inability), his contempt for the Odisha media (he hasn’t granted an interview to an Odia newspaper or an Odia channel or held a press conference in 14 years), his complete lack of respect for fellow politicians (including those from his own party).

It is as if he keeps taunting us; “I would treat you wretched Odias like dirt and you would still continue to vote for me.” [And we ‘swabimaani’ Odias keep cheering him every time he does so !!]

After his disdain for Odias, it is his claim of ‘honesty and transparency’ that gets my goat. I have absolutely no doubt that the government headed by Naveen would go down in history as the most corrupt in the state ever, though he has successfully hidden his misdeeds – at least till recently – with a combination of obfuscation, dollops of doles to the poor and adroit media management. But I can assure readers that he would spend, somewhat like his saviour the UPA II government, the rest of his current term fending off corruption charges.

The revelations thrown up during the ongoing CBI probe into the chit fund scam have already taken the sheen off his sparkling white visage, at least among the newspaper reading and television watching people (not to forget the lakhs of investors who lost the earnings of their lifetime in the scam).

And the probe has barely got past the AT group so far! One can rest assured by the time it comes to an end, the Naveen Patnaik government would have been shown for what it is: a thoroughly corrupt and venal government that has fooled around with the public and public money for years.

But if the CBI’s dubious (though unsuccessful) efforts to give him a clean chit in the suspicious allocation of the Talabaira II coal block to the Aditya Birla group managed Hindalco is anything to go by, nothing short of a Supreme Court monitored CBI probe would bring out the whole truth about the complicity of his party and government in the chit fund scam.

Bruised as he is with the revelations in the chit fund and coal scams, Naveen Patnaik’s ultimate nightmare these days must be the very real prospect of a Supreme Court ruling asking for a CBI inquiry in the mining scam, unquestionably the Mother of All Scams in the history of the state. The findings of the Justice MB Shah Commission have proved that there are even more compelling reasons for the apex court to order a CBI inquiry in the mining scam in the state than it had in the case of the chit fund scam. If a CBI probe is indeed ordered into it, his much tom-tommed image is sure to turn decisively from that of ‘Mr. Clean’ to one of ‘Mr Dirty’.

The third reason for my opposition to this imported leader is his politics of dole. His entire politics stands on this basic premise: keep the people poor so that they remain perennially beholden – and grateful, one may add – to you for the doles. The philosophy (if it can be called that) has served him wonderfully well so far in electoral terms. If the poor shirk productive work in the process, then so be it!

The fourth ground for my objection to the Naveen government is its manifest propensity to hand over the bountiful natural resources of the state, including its rich mineral wealth, on a platter to rapacious industrialists without any thought about the long term impact it would have on the people, the environment and even the economy. If Naveen had his way, he would have gifted whatever remains of Odisha’s natural resources to greedy businessmen from outside for unthinking exploitation. I believe every Odia owes it to the state to stop him in his tracks.Bhupinder with Naveen

The fifth reason flows from the fourth: the Naveen government’s complete disregard for agriculture and the farmers’ community. Periodic events like the farmers’ convention held in Sambalpur recently cannot hide his government’s total neglect, apathy and worse for the farmers, who still constitute nearly 70% of the population despite all the brave talk of industrialisation.

The sixth reason for my consistent anti-Naveen stand is the mighty wall he has built around himself (which are taller than the walls of Naveen Niwas) to keep the ‘people’ in whose name he rules at arm’s length. He is easily the most inaccessible Chief Minister – for the common man that is – in the whole of the country.

The hundreds of people who have been doing the rounds of his grievance cell for years without ever getting to meet him would vouch for that. But if you are a top shot industrialist or a businessman, he would grant you an audience at the shortest possible notice.

I am sure readers can add to this list of grievances, which are by no means exhaustive. But together, they do provide me enough reasons to oppose him, for whatever little it is worth, tooth and nail. I am under absolutely no illusion that The Monarch would lose any sleep over my opposition or that of a hundred others like me as long as the people keep voting for him.

But I stand firm in my belief that all bad things (and Naveen’s reign is certainly one), like all good things, must come to an end someday. The only question is how soon that day would arrive.

Till that day arrives, I am proud to continue wearing anti-Naveenism on my sleeves, even if I am in a minority of one in the state.

It appears to be that you have written this to garner more support from Crony Capitalist and drug peddlers who never wanted inclusive Growth. You can send your’s article to them, why they should fund you for being Anti Naveen.

After all, to write with a passion and in favour of vested interest a person need not be a journalist. Rather he need to have the audacity to argue any case in his or her favour.

Unfortunately, People like me even staying outside Odisha understands well why certain News Channels discuss the matter in negative manner and even spread lies by inviding some dissident leaders. For Example : Blame the govt. for providing rice at INR. 1.00, Blame the govt. for starvation death.

The Answer for your’s all negativism, you can analyse well, When you find Journalist breaking the cue in Pass port office/Railway station and tell the people that they are journalist. So they can write anything – In this case Manhandling, mollestation etc…

If you are jealous about someone’s personality, please try to learn How to forgive and forget the matter – If it distracts you in achieving the goal.

I tried to respond you in generic manner, since your’s thesis is big enough for me to respond point by point. Remember “Yeh Public Sab Janti Hey”….

      Dear Mr Das,

Do you even know what the term ‘Crony Capitalism’ means? I don’t have to garner support for crony capitalists because they have the unstinted support of the man who calls all the shots in Odisha: Naveen Patnaik. As for the ‘drug peddler’ bit, I could not really make out who exactly you were hinting at.

I can assure you I am happy with the little I earn and don’t really need any funding from anybody. If I really wanted funding, I would have gone to the biggest funder of them all and licked his boots – as you seem to be doing – rather than approach his detractors.

You say the people I have allegedly batted for do not want ‘inclusive growth’. So who do you think wants it? Naveen Patnaik? You must be living in another planet – and not just outside Odisha – not to know that the god that you worship is the biggest enemy of ‘inclusive growth’. If your idea of inclusive growth is giving the poor rice at Rs 1 a kg, I can only pity you. As for starvation deaths, please tell me who should I blame it on if not the government? The people who die for want of food?

I, however, agree with your contention that one does not have to be a journalist to ‘write with a passion and in favour of vested interest’. You have yourself proved the point with your letter.

For your information, I have never jumped a queue in my life – whether in the passport office, railway reservation counter or elsewhere. I even paid a fine of Rs 100 for not wearing a helmet while driving the other day!

I am amused by your suggestion that I am ‘jealous’ of your god. I would have been ‘jealous’ if I had a desire to replace him. A person like you will never understand what my ‘goal’ is. I am proud of my ‘negativism’ and don’t believe in either forgetting or forgiving – certainly not when it involves the vital interests of my state and its people.

You are right, Mr Das: “Yeh public Sab Jaanti Hai”. I don’t have to remember it because I have never forgotten it in the first place. Just wait for the next elections. May be you will have to remember it!

Dear Mr. Sahoo, Your writing about Mr. Naveen Patnaik, the CM of Odisha is very much encouraging. But I am also a shut-mouth. Long ago I was writing letters regularly to a leading English newspaper, thinking that I can do some good to the people by raising certain issues but the paper stopped publishing my letters. Soon after the ex-Director of this paper was removed from his job after a vivid description of the 2 G scam got published in that paper. So, where do the general public stand? If we remember the lines from our scripture, ” I know what is Dharma, but I have no desire to follow it, and I know what is Adharma, still I cannot escape from it, Oh God, You are in my heart, I do what You direct me to do”.

A criminal can never go unpunished.

    Mr Sahu .

Naveen is far better than CM’s who has been at the helm of affairs in the state. some of ur reasonings are correct .
Like not speaking odiya, and not giving interview to odia channels or print media.

but why no journalist is aggressive enough in asking question to him and letting him go easily.

But the paper/media house for which u are writing is very much naveen against and the reasons best known to everyone in odisha And those guys have no credibility in odisha .so in public opinion ur arugments does not hold so good.

    Thanks

    Mr Sahu,

Very well written article. Every single statement is 100 percent true…especially there are 2 things in your piece that make me feel so concerned… the attitude towards Odisha media and absolute wrong policy of 1 rupee rice. I have seen first hand, this policy has made hard working people completely lose faith in the right way to make a decent living.

This single policy will take Odisha back by a generation.

    Thank you for the article

    Mr Sahu

I can not agree more than what you have said about Naveen’s inability to speak in Odia. But frankly speaking the media house that you belongs has no credibility in the public. I read Sambad everyday not for extracting anything serious but for fun: how few jokers can come together n vent their tirade against Naveen and go on praising Janaki whom ppl of Odisha consider the worst CM ever.
I don’t like the same man ruling for long because it has its own implications but my distaste for you N your media house far outweighs my distaste for the present establishmment. I don’t even consider you a journalist just a propagandist. For a journalist should posses integrity, balance of thought and foresight. I know how you forecasted that Naveen would just creep in to power with a slender margin and BJP would be a force to reckon with. Before every election you go on predicting doomsday senario for BJD (either vote shares will be reduced significantly or possibility of defeat). But because you have sorrounded yourself with a bunch of like minded people, you never know the ground realities and therefore secures a big zero their. Coming to balance of thought and neutrality, whole of Odisha knows you. I don’t have to add anything. About integrity I will not comment because I am not aware about that.
By the way I too want BJP to rise in Odisha at least to the level of providing decent opposition but I know BJP is no where close to BJD for I know the ground realities.
