Odisha youth, who attempted suicide in front of Assembly, dies

Bhubaneswar: A youth, who attempted suicide by consuming poison after cutting his hands, succumbed at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack district while undergoing treatment today evening.

As soon as the youth, Dushmanta Das from Kujang area of Jagatsinghpur district tried to end his life in front of the State Assembly earlier in the day, he was overpowered by the security personnel and rescued. Das was then admitted to the SCB hospital where he succumbed.

The youth attempted suicide over alleged medical negligence at the hospital.

He met with an accident on March 22, 2020 while returning home. After his two-wheeler collided with a pick-up truck, Das sustained grievous injuries in his left leg. He was initially taken to the Jagatsinghpur district and then to the SCB hospital.

On March 23 he underwent plastic surgery at SCB hospital. However, he could not walk. On June 20 he again approached SCB doctors and underwent another operation.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic he was discharged within few days within the second operation at SCB.
When Das could not walk, his family members admitted him to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar a few days back. The Doctors told him his leg operations undertaken by SCB was faulty.

He then wrote to the Chief Minister requesting him for assistance towards his treatment. His young daughter’s also requested Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik in a video asking him to cure her father.

After coming to know about the matter, the Health and Family Welfare department Special secretary wrote to SCB and asked the hospital to start treatment of Dushmanata under BSKY.

Acting as per the directive, Dushmanta was admitted to the orthopedic department of SCB. He expected the third operation at SCB would help him walk. But the medical apathy at the hospital led him to stage a dharna in front of the hospital Superintendent office on September 5.

He then tried to end his life in front of the State Assembly today.
