Odisha’s SOA varsity hosts intl seminar on service sector

Experts from allied fields converged at the SOA University in the Odisha capital today for a two-day international seminar to discuss and understand the dynamics of the rapid growth of the service sector, the largest and fastest growing sector globally.

SOA seminar “About 57 per cent of the country’s GDP is contributed by the service sector which included banking, finance, IT, telecom, education, health care, tourism, hotels, trade, transport and entertainment,” Prof Sekhar Choudhury, former Director of IIM, Kolkata said at the international seminar on “Sustaining Competitive Advantage in Service Sector.”

“This sector is part of our daily life now with a strong growth rate,” he said.

The seminar was also addressed by Dr Hugo Gaggiotti of the University of the West of England, Bristol, United Kingdom besides Prof Ashok Banerjee and Prof Amit Dhiman of IIM, Kolkata, Prof Charles Genglor of American University of Sharjah, UAE, Prof Abhijit Ganguly, Dean, Aegis School of Business and Telecommunication, Mumbai, Prof Sitikantha Mishra, former Director, IITTM, Bhubaneswar and Prof Kailash Mishra, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Sri University, Bhubaneswar.

Prof (Dr) Amit Banerjee, Vice-Chancellor of SOA University, presided over the inaugural session.

Prof  Jyotirmoy Mohapatra, Dean of Institute of Business and Computer Studies (IBCS), said around 100 research papers had been presented in the seminar jointly organized by IBCS, School of Hotel Management (SHM) and Sum Nursing College (SNC), all run under the SOA University.

Prof  Bibhuti Bhushan Pradhan, Seminar Director of SUKAS 2015, said the real reason behind the growth of the service sector was the increase in urbanization, liberalization, globalization and privatization.

“Among fast growing emerging economies, India has a distinctive role to play and the Make in India movement could be strengthened through a strong and sustainable economy,” he said.

Ram Chandra Mohapatra, Organising Secretary of SUKAS 2015 and Dr. Sarojkanta Biswal, Convenor, also spoke.
