Padma Shri Nanda Kishore Prusty loses battle to COVID-19

Jajpur: Veteran teacher Padma Shri Nanda Kishore Prusty, fondly known as Nanda Sir, who had tested positive for COVID-19 recently, succumbed to the virus at a private hospital here today. He was 104.

The teacher died at around 1.30 pm, said family sources.

Prusty, a native of Kantira village under Sukinda police limits in Jajpur district, was first admitted to Sukinda Community Health Centre on November 28 as he complained of illness. He was later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on November 29. Thereafter, he was shifted to Tata Steel Medica Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Few days ago, he was again shifted to a private hospital in the state capital.

Prusty had received the prestigious Padma award from President Ram Nath Kovind on November 9 for his contribution to the field of education.

He spent several decades of his life providing free education to children and adults in Jajpur district. Nanda Sir, who was able to study only till Class 7 due to his family’s financial instability, had been teaching children free of cost with an aim of eradicating illiteracy from his village.
