Police accept negligence on its part behind escape of Mamita Meher murder accused

Bhubaneswar/Balangir: Minutes after the escapee prime accused of woman teacher Mamita Meher murder case was nabbed in Bangomunda of Balangir district, DIG (Northern Range) Deepak Kumar accepted police negligence is the reason behind the escape of the accused.

Kumar told media persons due to the negligence of police personnel, the accused, Govind Sahu managed to escape while being in the police custody in Titlagarh barrack. An investigation will be conducted to find out under what circumstances Sahu managed to escape, the DIG added.

A case under section 224 has already been registered. Those who helped Govind escape the police custody and reach Bangomunda will be brought under the purview of the investigation, Kumar said.

The Balangir District Police has already suspended three police personnel in this connection on charges of dereliction of duty.

Today afternoon, the Balangir Police arrested Govind Sahu from a sugarcane field in Budhipadar under Bandhugaon police limits. The cops announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for sharing information about him. He had escaped from the police custody on October 17 and was absconding since then.

The remnants of Mamita Meher’s body along with an anklet and a chain were exhumed by the cops from an under-construction stadium site of Sunshine English Medium School at Mahaling this morning.

BJP and Congress have been demanding Minister of State Captain Dibyashankar Mishra’s scalp after photos of him with the accused did rounds on social media. It was also alleged that the Minister has been involved in the woman teacher murder case.
