Prepaid electricity bills for consumers in Odisha soon

Bhubaneswar: Electricity consumers in Odisha now can pre-pay their bills as the state Government will soon come up with prepaid smart energy meters for all households, informed Assembly Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro here today.

Speaking to mediapersons following a meeting of Assembly Standing Committee of Energy Department in the House, the Speaker said consumers will be able to pay for the units through SIM cards on prepaid basis and power supply will be cut-off once the prepaid amount is exhausted.

The meeting attended by senior officials of Tata Power Southern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPSODL) and Energy Department  had discussion on different issues related to power supply in the concerned areas. They discussed on how to ensure smooth supply of electricity in the areas.
Few middlemen, who were engaged to collect electricity bills, were found misappropriating the collected money. Hence, Self Help Groups (SHGs) will be roped in for collection of electricity bills, he added.

The Speaker further informed that steps will be taken to ensure electricity supply to houses, that are still deprived of the service. Besides, public announcement will be made prior to any power cut.

Contractual workers( both technical and non technical) will be paid as per the remuneration fixed by the state Government, Patro added.
