Syndicate bank case: Middleman sent to police custody

New Delhi, Sep 18 :

A court here Thursday sent Purushottam Lal Totlani, the alleged middleman in the Syndicate Bank bribery case who was on the run, to two days police custody.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge Swarna Kanta Sharma allowed the investigating agency to quiz Totlani till Sep 20 after he was presented before the court on expiry of his one-day police custody.

The CBI judge had Wednesday sent Totlani to custody till Thursday, after he surrendered.

The court in August had rejected his anticipatory bail plea and initiated proceedings to declare him a proclaimed offender in the case.

The court observed that non-bailable warrants were earlier issued against him twice in the case and Totlani was evading arrest.

Bhushan Steel Ltd. vice chairman Neeraj Singhal and Syndicate Bank chairman-cum-managing director S.K. Jain, among others, are accused in the case.

The CBI had Aug 2 arrested Jain for allegedly taking Rs.50 lakh as bribe for raising the credit limit of some companies in violation of banking rules. Singhal was arrested Aug 7.
