Telengana cops beaten up by locals in Odisha; here’s why

Berhampur: Palpable tension prevailed at Dengadi village under Patapur police limits in Ganjam district today after a group of locals allegedly thrashed Telangana police officials in civil clothes suspecting them to be child lifters.

The incident took place when the cops had gone to the village to investigate a loot case.

Sources said one Manoj Swain (25) of the village who works in Hyderabad had looted gold and cash from a house by brandishing gun. Acting on a complaint, the Telengan police had arrested the accused and went to his village today for further investigation. Around seven cops had gone to the village taking the accused with them.

When the cops detained the younger brother of the accused, the family members and the villagers clashed with them. Suspecting the cops as child theft, the villagers thrashed them brutally and vandalized their four-wheeler. Though the police showed their identity cards, the mob did not believe and continued to beat them.

On receiving information, Patapur police reached the spot and rescued the cops from the villagers’ clutches. The Patapur police also detained the brother and father of accused Manoj.
