5 iconic speeches to inspire you on Independence Day

Pictures may speak more than a thousand words, but nothing undermines the intensity and impact an eloquent orator has when he unleashes his deadly ammo of wordplay. In an era where television and the Internet were unheard of, public speeches were the medium of arousing national conscious, be it in rallys or via radio.
Great men and even greater words were spoken and today, Odisha Sun Times brings you five such iconic speeches that were made during India’s freedom struggle that still instill pride every time we read or hear them:
- Mahatma Gandhi’s “There is no salvation for India…”

2. Balgangadhar Tilak’s “Swaraj is my birthright”
Remember Ranbir Kapoor’s song Sadda Haq? Move over. The father of Indian revolution Bal Gangadhar Tilak had formulated his Swaraj philosophy right after his trial for incitement to murder of the Assistant Collector of Pune and serving prison time, he gave a speech with his famed “Swaraj is my birthright slogan.

3. Mahatma Gandhi’s “Do or die”
Mahatma Gandhi gave this slogan to the country during the Quit India struggle on 8 August 1942 at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting in Bombay. This speech as gone down in history as one of the best speeches made by the Father of the nation.

4. Subhash Bose’s “Give me blood…”
Perhaps one of the the most thought-provoking and messianic speeches in the pre-Independence Days that has become an anthem, the founder of Azad Hind Fauj, Subhash Chandra Bose called upon and inspired the youth of the country to lend a hand in the struggle for freedom.
