546 prison deaths, 51 custodial deaths in Odisha in last 10 years: Min

Bhubaneswar: Odisha recorded a total of 546 prison deaths and 51 custodial deaths in the last 10 years, informed Minister of State (Home) Tusharkanti Behera in the State Assembly today while replying to a question by Khandapada MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik.

Out of the 546 prisoners, 346 were under trial. Highest number of 78 prisoners died in the year 2020, as per the information provided by the minister.

Similarly, maximum eight accused died in police custody in 2015, the information said.
