7 illicit liquor traders arrested in city

Bhubaneswar, Mar 26:

A special team formed by Commissionerate police as part of its drive against the illegal sale of liquor in the city, arrested seven persons from different colonies in Saliasahi slum under Nayapalli police limits on Wednesday while conducting a surprise raid.

The accused persons identified as Bapi Murmu, Kanhu Kisko, Saila Das, Jayanti Soren, Pitha Soren, Dangri Marandi and Kara Hansda, all of Salia Sahi , were forwarded to the local court today, the police said.

A case against the accused has been registered under sections 47A and 52A of Bihar and Odisha Excise Act and 272, 273 of the IPC.

Officer in charge of the special team Debi Prasad Dash said,the team  under the supervision of  Superintendent of Police (SP) Harish Nayak conducted raids in several colonies of Saliasahi slum and rounded up the culprits.

The persons arrested from different locations of the slum were involved in the brewing and sale of illegal country made liquor in the city since many days, the officer added.

“We have seized 250 litres of locally made alcohol, and 1200 kg of ‘pocha’ ( the raw material used for preparation of hooch)  from their possession. This is worth more than a lakh of rupees,” Dash said.
