Aadhaar-PAN linking deadline extended to 30 June 2023

Bhubaneswar: The deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar has been pushed back to June 30, 2023, giving taxpayers more time to comply without facing any consequences. A notification confirming this extension will be released separately.

According to the Income-tax Act, 1961, anyone who received a PAN before July 1, 2017, and is eligible for an Aadhaar number must provide their Aadhaar information to the relevant authority by March 31, 2023, along with a prescribed fee. Failure to do so would result in penalties starting on April 1, 2023. However, the deadline for submitting Aadhaar information for PAN-Aadhaar linking has now been extended until June 30, 2023.

From 1st July, 2023, the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to intimate their Aadhaar, as required, shall become inoperative and the consequences during the period that PAN remains inoperative will be as follows:

  1. no refund shall be made against such PANs;
  2. interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during which PAN remains inoperative;  and
  3. TDS and TCS shall be deducted /collected at higher rate, as provided in the Act.

If an individual pays a fee of Rs. 1,000 and informs the appropriate authority of their Aadhaar information, their PAN can be reactivated within 30 days.

However, certain individuals are exempt from the PAN-Aadhaar linking requirement and will not be subject to any related consequences. This group includes those residing in specified states, non-residents as per the Act, individuals who are not Indian citizens, and those who are at least 80 years old at any point during the previous year.
