AITA-OTA Championship: Top seed girls sail into quarters

Three top seed girls including Yubrani Banerjee of West Bengal stormed into the quarterfinals on the opening day of the of the AITA-OTA Championship Series Girl’s Under-14 Tennis Tournament at the SOA University Sports Complex here on Monday.

Yubrani, who got a walkover for the second round, beat Anjum Shaikh Mushrath (AP) 9-1 while Odisha’s Alisha Samal (2nd seed) and Rutuparna Choudhury (3rd seed) reached the quarterfinals by thrashing Shreya Chakraborty and Khushi Rajpuria, both of West Bengal by 9-0 and 9-0 respectively.

In the Boy’s singles, the first round matches were completed with the top five seeds led by Odisha’s Swostik Pradhan getting walkover for the second round.

The other top four seeds are Arvind Sundar of Karnataka, Mahesh Mohapatra and Pratyush Chhotray of Odisha and N Kirandeva of Tamil Nadu.

All the matches are being played on the basis of best of 17 games with the player winning nine games being declared the winner.

The five-day tournament is being organized by the SOA University under the aegis of the Odisha Tennis Association (OTA).

The matches are being played on the newly-laid synthetic courts of the University in its Kalinga Nagar campus.
