Nayak, who called on Patnaik along with his mother today, said that supporters of a BJD minister and a party MP were behind the incident.

“They are members of our party. They had been opposing me since my election to the Assembly. They did not want me to contest the election on BJD ticket. Nothing worked, even though I attempted to pacify the matter,” said Nayak speaking to reporters after meeting the Chief Minister.

“I have a strong support base among the dalits and tribals. This vote bank threatens the minister and the MP. Besides, they cannot tolerate a dalit leader rising up the ranks. It is political vendetta,” he added.

In a related development, the police today arrested seven accused in connection with the attack.

It may be noted here that Nayak was attacked during a meeting at Gundhichaghagi under Ghatagaon panchayat in Keonjhar on August 28 resulting in a head injury to the MLA.
