Bhubaneswar, Oct 7:
A five-member team from the Centre, led by Union Additional Commissioner of Agriculture R P Malik, will visit drought-hit Bargarh and Sonepur districts of Odisha today to assess the situation.
Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh had directed to constitute the team after his ministerial colleague Dharmendra Pradhan requested him to send a Central team to assess the drought situation in the state and suggest remedial measures to combat agrarian and rural distress.
In all, the team will visit eight districts in the state – Dhenkanal, Khurda, Bolangir, Boudh, Bargarh, Sonepur, Kandhamal and Keonjhar, which have received less than normal rainfall this year.
There have been rise in reports of farmer suicides in the state over crop failure due to insufficient rain.
