Commissionerate Police to launch programme against extortion

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to check forcible collection of money from traders and businessmen by anti-socials in the Twin City of  Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the Commissionerate police will launch a  programme ‘Say No To Extortion”.

Briefing mediapersons here, Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi today said the initiative will begin on October 19. A special anti-extortion task force headed by Additional CP Rekha Lohani will be formed.

“Names of the people informing about extortion will be kept secret and they will also be awarded. We seek people’s cooperation, without  which the initiative will not be successful,” he added.

Moreover, a database on notorious extortionists will be created for exemplary action and a helpline number will be issued for public. Review meetings will be held every 15 days at PS level and DCP level.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Commissionerate police has arrested several criminals, including Shakil on charges of extortion this year.
