Bhubaneswar: As Cyclone Jawad is approaching towards Odisha coast, India Meteorological Department (IMD) today issued wind and rainfall warnings for coastal districts of the State.

As per the bulletin by IMD, the Deep Depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 25 kmph during past 06 hours, intensified further into Cyclonic Storm ‘JAWAD’ (Pronounced as JOWAD) and lay centered at 11.30 am on December 3 over westcentral of Bengal near Lat. 14.5°N and Long. 85.5°E, about 420 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 530 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha) and 650 km south-southwest of Paradip (Odisha).

It is likely to move northwestwards, intensify further and reach west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts by December 4 morning. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move along Odisha coast reaching near Puri around December 5 noon. Subsequently it is likely to continue to move north-northeastwards along coastal Odisha towards West Bengal coast.

December 3: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south coastal Odisha.

December 4: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall & extremely heavy falls at isolated places very likely over south coastal Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over north
coastal Odisha & adjoining interior districts and also over coastal districts of Gangetic west Bengal.

December 5: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over Gangetic West Bengal & north Odisha and heavy rainfall at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.

December 6: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over Assam & Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura and heavy rainfall at isolated places over west Bengal.

Wind warning:

Squally wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph over westcentral and adjoining southeast & eastcentral Bay of Bengal during next 06 hours.

Gale winds speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph likely to prevail over westcentral & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal from today evening and gradually increase becoming 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph over northwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal from the evening of December 4 for the subsequent 12 hours.

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to commence along & off North Andhra Pradesh – Odisha coasts from the mid-night of today, December 3 and increase gradually becoming 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph from December 4 evening, for the subsequent 12 hours.

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph also likely to commence along & off West Bengal coast from December 4 evening and become Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph from the morning of December 5 for the subsequent 12 hours.

Wind warning in Odisha:

The wind speed may reach 90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph over the districts of Puri and Jagatsinghpur. The districts including Ganjam, Khordha, Kendrapara and Cuttack may experience the wind speed upto 60-80 kmph at the time of landfall.

Rainfall warning in Odisha:

The cyclonic storm may trigger intense rainfall from December 3 midnight onwards over the districts Ganjam, Gajapati, Jagatsinghpur and Khordha. The moderate rainfall is likely over remaining coastal districts.

December 4-5: Red warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls (more than 200 mm) over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur.

Heavy rainfall is likely over the districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Puri, Kendrapara and Khordha.

Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to at one or two places over the districts of Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khordha, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, and Rayagada

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Koraput and Malkangiri.

December 5-6: Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Puri.

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Ganjam and Gajapati.

Storm surge warning:

Storm surge of about 0.5 – 1m height above astronomical tide is likely to inundate low lying areas of coastal districts of Odisha around noon of December 5.

December 4 being a new Moon day, higher astronomical tides of about 2-4 m height are likely along the coast of Odisha & West Bengal.

Fishermen Warning:

Fishermen are advised not to venture into westcentral and adjoining southeast & eastcentral Bay of Bengal on December 3, over west-central & northwest Bay of Bengal and along & off north Andhra Pradesh - Odisha- West Bengal coasts during December 3- 5, 2021.
