Dacoity bid foiled in Odisha capital; five arrested

Bhubaneswar, July 24:

A dacoity bid was foiled in the Odisha capital and five miscreants were arrested due to timely action by the Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police yesterday night. The arrested accused were forwarded to a local court here today, Laxmisagar police revealed.

The police teams have seized one pistol, one live ammunition, two swords, two iron rods, three mobile phones and two bikes from their possession.

The arrested accused were identified as Anil Kumar Nayak alias Tutu (30), Jitendra Swain alias Jitu (24), Mithun Mohanty (32), all of Aska in Ganjam district, Lingaraj Patra alias Kuna (27) of Baunsuni in Boudh and Sarat Chandra Mohanty (38) of Khandagiri area in the city.

Inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Laxmisagar police P C Pal said acting on a tip off, the QAT team arrested five accused from Jharpada Melan ground here, during a surprise raid, while they were planning to commit a dacoity in the area. “Later QAT handed over the accused to us for further course of action,” he added.

The IIC said the accused, led by Mithun and Anil, have admitted that they were planning to commit a dacoity in the area.

A case has been registered against the accused under sections 319, 402 of IPC and 25/27 Arms Act. Investigation is on to ascertain if any other person was involved in the gang, the IIC added.

Notably, Mithun has several cases pending against him at Aska police station.
