Heavy rains wreak havoc in Baleswar

Heavy rains over the last three days have wreaked havoc in Baleswar district throwing normal life out of gear.

Till reports last came in, flood waters of Jalaka river have inundated a vast area of the district.

The Basta-Baliapal road communication has been disrupted as flood water was flowing on the road near Pejagola.

While at least five gram panchayats of Basta block have been affected by partial inundation, 12 villages in six gram panchayats in the sadar block have been marooned.

However, Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga rivers were flowing below the danger level, reports said.

On Tuesday, a woman, Sumati Patra (26), of Sahada village of Basta block died as her house collapsed. The eight-year-old son of the deceased, injured in the mishap, has been admitted to the district headquarters hospital.

The Baleswar town received 142 mm and 94 mm of rainfall on Tuesday and Monday causing the overflowing of drain waters in Azimabad, FM College Road, Padhuanpada, Ranipatna, Chunabhati, Golapolo, Godhibasa, Sunahat and Cinema Square areas of the town.
