‘Be impartial, firm, prompt in handling crime’, CM tells Odisha police

In what must rank as the irony of the year, Chief minister Naveen Patnaik today urged the Odisha Police to be ‘impartial, firm and prompt’ in handling crime and criminals.
“Investigation of crime is one of the most important responsibilities of the police. Such investigation has to be conducted efficiently and effectively,” he said addressing the closing ceremony of the 62nd Police Duty Meet here.
As if that was not enough, Patnaik followed it up with an astounding claim that is certain to evoke even more derision. “The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha police has successfully investigated many serious crimes,” he said.
The people in the audience – other than policemen that is – must have had a tough time suppressing a loud guffaw at this statement since the ongoing CBI probe into the chit fund scam has proved beyond a shade of doubt how ‘successfully’ the EOW had been probing this ‘serious crime’.
The Chief Minister urged the police to give top priority to the investigation of offences against women, children, dalits and tribals.“The state government has initiated various steps to ensure enhanced security for women against crime,” he claimed.
The alacrity with which the police have investigated the cases of Sunita Raita, Kanakdei Bhatra and Banita Nayak proves that the state police was already doing this and did not really need this piece of gratuitous advice from the Chief Minister!
Praising the work of the state police, the chief minister said rapid progress had been made in the investigation of cyber crimes.
Referring to the steps taken by his government for modernisation of police force, the chief minister said there had been substantial improvement in the police infrastructure in the state. Besides, new posts in various ranks have been created, he added.
“Apart from this, the State Forensic Science Laboratory has been strengthened with sanction of additional manpower,” the chief minister said, adding that a new DNA laboratory would become functional very soon.
“I am glad to see the progress made, particularly in the spheres of increasing use of scientific tools in investigation and inculcation of scientific temper among police personnel,” he remarked.
Congratulating all the winners and participants of the meet, the chief minister advised them to use the knowledge gained from the meet in their professional field and render their best professional services to ensure peace in the state for the benefit of common people.
