Man gets lifer for murder in Odisha

The court of Additional Sessions Judge (ADJ) of Bonai in Odisha’s Sundargarh district today sentenced a man to rigorous life imprisonment for killing his neighbour in 2011.

The court slapped a fine of Rs 12000 on him with a provision of additional six-month jail term if he fails to pay Rs 10000. It also awarded him two-year jail term under section 324 of IPC with an extended three-month jail term if he fails to pay Rs 1000 and another three-year term under section 457 of IPC with a provision of additional three-month term if he fails to pay Rs 1000.

The accused Bhagban Mahakud (45) was staying at Haldikudar village under Lahunipada police station limits.

On April 16, 2011, he had an altercation with his neighbour Makru Lohar (50) over installation of a tube well. Enraged, Bhagaban entered into Makru’s house in the night and attacked him with an axe killing him on the spot. He also attacked his son Bidyadhar when he tried to resist him.

On the next day, Bidyadhar lodged a complaint with the Lahunipada police who later arrested and forwarded him to the court which remanded him to jail after rejecting his bail plea.

After examining 19 witnesses ADJ, Bonai Ganeswar Pati awarded rigorous life term to Bhagaban with a fine of Rs 12,000.
