Met dept predicts very heavy rainfall in south Odisha

As the ‘very severe cyclonic storm Hudhud’ moved closer and lay about 490 km south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha by 5.30 PM today, the local Met Centre warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall over many parts of the state.

In its evening bulletin, the Met Centre warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over South Odisha during next 24 hours and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places over districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nawarangpur, Ganjam,Gajpati,Kalahandi and Kandhamal districts in subsequent 48 hours.

There may be heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places in districts of Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Nawapara, Boudh, Sonepur and Bolangir during the same period, the bulletin said.

In Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada,Koraput and Malkangiri districts there could be damage to thatched huts, breaking of tree branches causing minor damage to power and communication lines, and uprooting of small trees, the bulletin warned, adding, agricultural crops would also face damage in these districts.

The Met Centre advised people in the vulnerable areas to remain at or move to safe places.

It also advised total suspension of all fishing operations along and off the Odisha coast.
