Minor girl ends life over alleged harassment by police in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur

Jagatsinghpur: A minor girl allegedly died by suicide over being harassed by police at Haveli village under Palli panchayat of Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district.

The deceased was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her house, this morning.

According to reports, the parents of the girl had absconded after registration of a poll violence case against them by police while she was staying in the house with her two sisters.

Cops had allegedly visited the house multiple times in search of her parents and threatened her.

Last night, some police personnel knocked the door of the house. As the girl and her sisters didn’t open the door, the cops threatened to pick them up in the morning, the kin of the deceased said, adding that she took the extreme step over the harassment by the police.

Refuting the allegation of harassment by police, Jagatsinghpur SDPO Ramesh Singh said that police had visited the village last time on March 3. The cops have not gone to the village since then, he said.

Tension ran high in the area today as relatives of the girl along with locals staged a road blockade on Balibhaunri-Sikharghat road by burning tyres and placing the body on road.
